Fredrick Ruled Out of AFCON 2025 After Knee Injury in Training

Written by on 26 — 11

Nigeria and Brentford defender Benjamin Fredrick has been ruled out of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after sustaining a knee injury during training with Belgian club FCV Dender.

The 19-year old, who is on loan from Brentford, suffered the setback in a closed training session, and early medical assessments indicate he will not recover in time for the continental showpiece. He is expected to return to action only after the tournament.

Fredrick had emerged as one of the most consistent performers for Nigeria in recent months, starting the Super Eagles’ last six matches under head coach Eric Chelle. His absence is considered a significant blow to Nigeria’s defensive options heading into AFCON 2025.

The rising centre back has been widely tipped as one of the country’s brightest prospects, following impressive showings in both club and international football before the injury.
