Nigeria’s iconic defender and Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong (M.O.N), has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a decade marked by remarkable leadership, resilience, and unforgettable moments in the national colours.
In a heartfelt statement released on X, Troost-Ekong reflected on his journey that began in 2015 when the late Stephen Keshi handed him his debut—an act he says changed his life and ignited his desire to follow in the legend’s footsteps.
Troost-Ekong, who earned 83 senior caps and featured in five major tournaments, described captaining Nigeria as a privilege beyond his dreams. Raised in the Netherlands, the “Oyibo Wall” became one of Nigeria’s most trusted leaders, guiding the team through three AFCON tournaments, the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, and securing medals at the Rio 2016 Olympics and AFCON competitions.
The 2023 AFCON, where he scored in the final and emerged as Player of the Tournament, remains one of his standout moments. He also exits the international stage as the highest-scoring defender in AFCON history, an honour he shares with teammates who shaped his journey.
Troost Ekong thanked his coaches, staff, teammates past and present, and especially the Nigerian fans he described as “the heartbeat of Nigerian football.” He emphasized that this is not a final goodbye, noting that his work within Nigerian communities continues and his love for the Super Eagles will never fade.
With a career defined by pride, commitment, and leadership, Troost Ekong says the iconic green and white shirt was “only borrowed,” and now passes the responsibility to the next generation.
His retirement marks the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter for one of Nigeria’s most respected football ambassadors.
