Super Eagles’ AFCON 2025 Goalkeeping Choices Trigger Debate

Despite limited game time at club level, Francis Uzoho has been named in Nigeria’s final squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, a decision that has already sparked strong reactions.
Uzoho made the 28-man list released by head coach Eric Chelle, even though he has featured only sparingly for Omonia Nicosia this season. His inclusion comes at a time when first choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is still nursing injuries to his ankle and hand. Although Nwabali has shown signs of recovery and has resumed light training, his full fitness for the tournament remains uncertain.
Chelle’s decision to retain both Uzoho and the recovering Nwabali, while leaving out Maduka Okoye, who has enjoyed better club form has intensified questions about Nigeria’s readiness in the goalkeeping department.
With AFCON 2025 fast approaching, concerns are growing that the Super Eagles may be heading into the tournament with a potential goalkeeper crisis. Whether this selection strategy will hold up under the pressure of continental competition assume to be a major concern.
