BREAKING: Coventry promoted back to Premier League as Frank Lampard ends 25 years of pain

Written by on 17 — 04

Coventry City have secured promotion to the Premier League, bringing an end to their 25-year absence from England’s top division.

Frank Lampard’s team only needed a single point from Friday’s Championship clash against Blackburn Rovers to achieve their goal. They managed it with a 1-1 draw at Ewood Park, courtesy of Bobby Thomas’ late equaliser in the 84th minute.

The result moved the Sky Blues to 86 points, cementing a top-two finish and guaranteeing automatic promotion with three matches still to play.

There was even potential for Coventry to clinch the Championship title this weekend had they won and second-placed Ipswich suffered a defeat to Middlesbrough on Sunday. However, that celebration will have to wait for at least one more round.

This promotion marks a significant turning point for Coventry, who have faced a turbulent journey in recent years. As recently as 2018, they were competing in League Two. After several near-misses in the Championship, they have finally broken through.

In 2023, Coventry came agonizingly close to reaching the Premier League but lost the playoff final at Wembley in a penalty shootout against Luton Town. The following season saw them miss the playoffs altogether, and a poor start to the most recent campaign led to manager Mark Robins being replaced by Frank Lampard.

Lampard took charge with Coventry languishing in 17th place. Under his guidance, the team mounted an extraordinary comeback, storming into playoff contention. However, heartbreak struck again as they were knocked out by Sunderland in the semi-finals.

Determined to avoid further disappointment, Lampard transformed Coventry into a dominant force during his first full season. The Sky Blues have led the Championship for the better part of the campaign, boasting the league’s most prolific attack.

A minor dip in form during the middle of the season turned out to be a rare blemish in what has otherwise been a truly remarkable year.
