Written by on 24 — 08

Nigeria’s Bayelsa Queens made a bright start to their CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU Zone B qualifying campaign, defeating Ghana’s Police Ladies 2-1 on Sunday at the Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.

Shakirat Moshood opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a composed finish after latching onto a headed pass. Forward Emem Essien, introduced as a first-half substitute, doubled the lead in the 62nd minute to give the Prosperity Girls control of the contest.

Police Ladies reduced the deficit six minutes later when Mary Berko found the net in the 68th minute, but Bayelsa held firm to secure all three points. Moshood’s performance earned her the Player of the Match award.

The result places Bayelsa Queens in a strong position in Group B, which also features ASKO Kara of Togo and Sam Nelly FC of Benin. The top two teams from the group will progress to the semi-finals scheduled for September 2, with the final to be played on September 5.

Bayelsa Queens will return to action on Wednesday, August 27, when they face ASKO Kara, before rounding off their group campaign against Sam Nelly FC on Saturday, August 30.
