DR Congo Government Debunks Viral $1 Million Bonus Claim as Leopards Chase World Cup Dream

Written by on 17 — 11

A swirl of excitement swept across social media this week after reports surfaced claiming that every DR Congo player would receive a staggering $1 million if the Leopards secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The story, which quickly gained traction across football circles, quoted Sport News Africa as saying President Félix Tshisekedi had approved the massive incentive, with a leading Congolese bank ready to process the payout.

But when the dust settled, official voices stepped forward and the narrative changed completely.

The Congolese Football Federation (FECOFA) dismissed the report without hesitation, describing it as false, unfounded, and not tied to any government approved document. In a firm statement, the federation urged the public to rely only on its official communications and warned against the spread of misinformation at a time when the national team needs focus, not distractions.

The Presidency also weighed in, making the government’s position unmistakably clear. According to Le Potentiel, Tshisekedi’s office labelled the viral $1 million story as “fake news” and insisted that no such promise was ever made. Instead, they clarified that the established bonus structure remains modest with performance rewards such as a $50,000 victory bonus and a $100,000 collective qualification bonus, not per player million dollar handouts.

Even Rawbank, the financial institution mentioned in the rumour, reportedly distanced itself from any special transfer arrangement linked to the national team.
