EFL Cup: Nigerian Youngsters Steal the Spotlight in England

Written by on 30 — 10

The Carabao Cup delivered drama, goals, and a sprinkle of Nigerian flair on Tuesday night as a new generation of young talents with Nigerian roots made their mark on English football.

At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea’s Tyrique George showed exactly why fans are excited about his potential. The 19 year old forward found the back of the net in Chelsea’s thrilling 4–3 win over Wolves, a goal that summed up his confidence and composure.

But the story didn’t end there. On the other side, Wolves striker Tolu Arokodare also made his presence felt, coolly finishing from close range to bring his team back into the contest. The goal was his second since moving from Belgian side Genk, and it’s clear the powerful forward is beginning to settle in English football.

Meanwhile, in North London, Ethan Nwaneri once again reminded everyone why he’s considered one of Arsenal’s brightest prospects. The 17 year-old midfielder opened the scoring with a stunning long range effort before Bukayo Saka wrapped things up with a tidy finish to give the Gunners a 2–0 win over Brighton.

At Selhurst Park, Chrisantus Uche came off the bench late on as Crystal Palace cruised past Liverpool 3–0. Palace’s attacking trio of Ismaïla Sarr and Yeremy Pino were on target, but Uche’s cameo added to what was a proud night for young Nigerian-eligible players in England.
