How the Race To The FIFA 2026 World Cup Qualification Works, With Spotlight on Africa

Written by on 6 — 09

The road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup is well underway across the globe, with teams from every continent battling for a place at football’s biggest stage. For the first time, the tournament will feature 48 teams, an expansion from the traditional 32, and this has reshaped the qualification process in each confederation.

African football has the biggest leap in representation. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) now has 9 direct World Cup slots, compared to five in past editions, and one extra slot via the inter continental play offs.

CAF’s format is straightforward, all 54 member nations were drawn into 9 groups of six teams each. The winner of each group qualifies directly for the 2026 World Cup.

The four best runner up across the nine groups advance to a CAF play-off. The play off winner proceeds to the FIFA inter confederation play off tournament, where two more World Cup tickets will be contested.

This means Africa could have up to 10 representatives at the World Cup for the first time in history.

Asia (AFC), awarded 8 direct spots plus 1 play off place. Qualification runs through multiple group stages, narrowing down until the final round, where the top two from each of three groups qualify automatically. Remaining berths are settled through AFC play offs, with one team advancing to the inter confederation play offs.

Europe (UEFA), with 16 direct slots, Europe maintains the largest representation. Teams are split into groups, with group winners qualifying directly. The remaining berths are decided via play offs that involve runner up and selected Nations League teams.

South America (CONMEBOL), the 10 nations play a single round robin league. The top 6 qualify directly, while the seventh placed team heads to the inter confederation play offs.

North, Central America and Caribbean (CONCACAF), as co-hosts, USA, Mexico, and Canada qualify automatically. The remaining nations compete for 3 direct slots, with two more advancing to the inter confederation play offs.

Oceania (OFC), for the first time in history, Oceania has a guaranteed direct slot. The OFC champion qualifies automatically, while the runner up enters the inter confederation play off.

The final two World Cup berths will be decided in a six team play off tournament in March 2026. Entrants include one team each from CAF, AFC, CONMEBOL and OFC, plus two from CONCACAF. The two highest ranked teams will receive byes, while the others face off in single matches. Ultimately, two teams will qualify for the World Cup.
