Hull City Fan Chooses AFCON Vibes as Semi Ajayi, Super Eagles Light Up Morocco

Written by on 12 — 01

When Nigeria locked horns with Algeria in the AFCON quarter finals, Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi had more than just Nigerian fans rooting for him in the stands. Among the sea of green and white was a Hull City supporter who decided African football passion beats the cold grind of the English lower leagues.

Scott Wood, a well travelled Hull City fan, stunned friends back home after discovering that following Nigeria to the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco was far cheaper and far more exciting than an away trip to Millwall.

Wood revealed that a planned December 13 journey to The Den would have cost him a fortune, prompting a rethink that turned into a “bucket list” AFCON experience instead. With affordable flights, accommodation and match tickets readily available, the choice was an easy one.

“It would have cost me £140 on the train, £30 for a match ticket and around £100 for a hotel to go to Millwall,” Wood told The Athletic. “But instead I got an £80 return flight, £16 match ticket and £100 hotel in Marrakech.”

For Wood, the decision paid off handsomely, not just financially, but emotionally. He soaked in the electric atmosphere as Nigeria edged past Algeria, with Semi Ajayi putting in a commanding performance at the heart of defence.

“To be inside the stadium and experience the atmosphere was great,” he added. “It felt like one big party for the Nigerians and was the complete opposite of English football, where we let the result determine if we have a good time or not.”
