Manchester United Renew Push for Aston Villa’s Emi Martínez as Goalkeeper Concerns Mount

Written by on 31 — 08

Manchester United have launched a fresh attempt to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano “Emi” Martínez as the transfer deadline looms.

The Red Devils have reopened talks with Martínez’s representatives and Aston Villa after a turbulent start to the season exposed the team’s vulnerabilities between the posts. André Onana’s poor performance in the Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town, coupled with Altay Bayındır’s shaky league displays, has forced United back into the market for a reliable No. 1.

Reports indicate that United are also keeping tabs on Royal Antwerp’s young shot stopper Senne Lammens as a secondary option. However, Martínez, a World Cup winner with Argentina and one of the Premier League’s most consistent goalkeepers, remains their prime target.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, are reluctant to sanction a late window exit for the 32 year-old, who still has four years left on his contract. The club had already rejected a loan bid from United earlier in the window, underlining Martínez’s importance to Unai Emery’s side.

Manager Ruben Amorim is believed to be strongly in favour of bringing Martínez to Old Trafford, but reports suggest there have been disagreements within United’s board over the financial commitment required. A permanent deal worth around £40 million has been speculated, though progress remains uncertain.
