Manchester City defender, Manuel Akanji, has once again shown pride in his Nigerian heritage, even while representing the Switzerland national team.
Born in Neftenbach, Switzerland, to a Swiss mother and a Nigerian father, Akanji has never hidden his connection to both cultures. In a recent interview, the 29 year old spoke passionately about his roots and how much his Nigerian background still means to him.
“This is the eagle from the Nigerian national team, with the football under it. It’s something I carry with me,” Akanji said, referring to a tattoo on his arm. “Obviously, I play for the Swiss national team, but I’m still really proud of being Nigerian. I could only make one decision, but they are still with me all the way.”
Akanji, who has visited Nigeria “three or four times” during his childhood, explained that his busy schedule has made it difficult to return.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve been back to Nigeria. It’s hard for me to go back because I don’t have a break in the winter, and summer is the rainy season, so you never really know what you’re going to get,” he added.
