A policy shift aimed at achieving efficiency and financial sustainability, the National Sports Festival (NSF) has significantly reduced the number of medal events on its calendar.
The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, announced the decision, confirming that the festival’s program has been trimmed to 20 sports.
Under the new structure, 15 events have been designated as compulsory for host states, while five will be listed as optional, allowing hosts a degree of flexibility in programming.
According to Olopade, the strategic decision was taken primarily to “ease the financial burden on host states.”
He further explained that streamlining the sports calendar will help organisers manage resources more efficiently while simultaneously ensuring the competition maintains a high standard of quality and focus.
This marks a notable reform in the administration of the country’s premier multi sport event, prioritizing resource management to encourage more states to successfully bid for and host the festival in the future.
