Written by on 11 — 11

The battle for Africa’s final ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off this week, with Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, and DR Congo set to fight it out in a tense playoff showdown in Morocco.

The quartet, who finished as the best runners up in their respective qualifying groups, will contest a mini tournament in Rabat to determine who earns the continent’s last spot in the intercontinental playoff slated for March 2026, the ultimate gateway to the World Cup in North America.

All matches will be played in Morocco, with the semifinals taking place on Thursday, November 13, and the final scheduled for Sunday, November 16.

Nigeria vs Gabon – 5:00 PM local time (16:00 GMT) at Moulay El Hassan Stadium.

Cameroon vs DR Congo – 8:00 PM local time (19:00 GMT) at Al Barid Stadium.

Final: Sunday, 8:00 PM (19:00 GMT) at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

The Draw and Rankings

CAF based the draw on FIFA’s October 17 world rankings, placing Nigeria (41st) as top seed, followed by Cameroon (54th), DR Congo (60th), and Gabon (77th). The pairings were set as Nigeria vs Gabon and Cameroon vs DR Congo.

Nigeria will look to the firepower of Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Samuel Chukwueze, with Stanley Nwabali standing tall between the posts.

Cameroon boast the experience of André Onana, Vincent Aboubakar, and Eric Maxim Choupo Moting.

DR Congo feature Premier League defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka and captain Chancel Mbemba, while Gabon will be inspired by veteran forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and midfielder Mario Lemina.

Only the winner of this playoff series will advance to the intercontinental playoff, where one more victory could seal a historic place at the 2026 World Cup.
