Nigeria’s Abdul Jabar Adama etched his name into history on the penultimate night of the World Junior Swimming Championships, becoming the first athlete from Nigeria (male or female) to claim a medal at a World Aquatics event.
Adama clinched silver in the men’s 50m butterfly with a time of 23.64 seconds, finishing just one-tenth behind Great Britain’s Dean Fearn, who won gold. Czech swimmer Jan Foltyn touched the wall a mere one-hundredth of a second later, taking bronze in 23.65.
The 17-year-old has been in exceptional form throughout the competition, breaking his own Nigerian record multiple times. He first lowered his mark to 23.61 during the preliminaries before improving it again to 23.48 in the semifinals, ranking second overall. His previous record of 23.81 had been set earlier this year at the British Swimming Championships.
Currently training with Mount Kelly Swimming in the United Kingdom, Adama has emerged as one of Nigeria’s brightest prospects in the pool. His performance is especially significant with the 50m butterfly set to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Games, following World Aquatics’ approval earlier this year.
For context, Nigeria has won only 27 Olympic medals across all sports and has yet to see a swimmer reach the podium. While a junior medal does not guarantee senior level dominance, Adama’s rapid progress positions him as one to watch over the next Olympic cycle. His semifinal time of 23.48 was just two-tenths shy of advancing to the semifinals at the recent World Championships and within striking distance of the World Aquatics “A” qualifying standard of 23.36.
