Written by on 15 — 10

Africa will be well represented at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after nine nations clinched automatic qualification, with Cape Verde making history by earning a spot at the global tournament for the very first time. Nigeria, however, must navigate the intercontinental playoffs for their chance to join them.

North African football continues to set the standard on the continent. Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia all booked their ticket to North America with commanding performances.

Egypt dominated Group A, finishing with eight wins, two draws, and no defeats, five points ahead of their nearest rivals. Their defense stood out, conceding only twice in ten matches.

Algeria were just as efficient, collecting 25 points and scoring freely throughout the qualifiers.

Morocco and Tunisia remained almost untouchable. Morocco finished unbeaten, while Tunisia posted an impressive 9–1–0 record.

Combined, the North African quartet won 28 of their 40 group matches, losing only three. Algeria’s Mohamed Amoura finished as the continent’s top scorer with 10 goals, while Egypt’s Mohamed Salah followed closely with nine, a testament to the region’s attacking strength and consistency.

Reigning African champions Senegal lived up to their reputation, finishing unbeaten with seven wins and three draws. Spearheaded by the experience of Sadio Mané, the Lions of Teranga remain Africa’s most consistent side on the world stage.

Mali also impressed with disciplined defending and creative attacking play. Their qualification marks another chapter in their rise as one of Africa’s most technically gifted sides, a reward for years of investment in youth development.

After missing out in 2018, Ghana bounced back strongly, led by young talents blending with experienced heads. Their return is a big boost for African football, given the Black Stars’ proud World Cup history.

Meanwhile, Ivory Coast, buoyed by a new generation of stars, sealed qualification in style. Their mix of physicality, flair, and tactical awareness has re-established them as one of the continent’s powerhouses.

No story is more inspiring than that of Cape Verde. The Blue Sharks defied all odds to finish top of their group with a 7–2–1 record, clinching a World Cup berth for the very first time.

For a nation of just over 600,000 people, it’s a monumental achievement, proof that determination, organization, and belief can bridge any gap. Their success will undoubtedly inspire smaller footballing nations across Africa.

While Nigeria fell short of direct qualification, all hope is not lost. The Super Eagles will compete in the Africa playoffs, if they come put tops then one more battle awaits at the International playoffs.
