NSC Rally Behind Team Nigeria as Amusan, Brume Lead Squad to 2025 World Athletics Championships

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has thrown its weight behind Team Nigeria as the country’s athletes head to the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, scheduled for September 13–21, 2025.
Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, urged the athletes to give their best and assured them of the Commission’s full support. He emphasized that Nigeria must make a strong statement on the global stage, adding that the athletes have the backing of millions of Nigerians.
“This is a moment of pride for our nation, and we trust our athletes to compete with determination and secure podium finishes,” Olopade said. “The Commission will continue to provide all the support they need and firmly stand behind them as they fly our flag in Tokyo.”
Olopade is expected to be on ground in Tokyo to ensure the team enjoys a smooth championship experience.
Leading Nigeria’s 15-member squad are world record holder and reigning 100m hurdles queen, Tobiloba Amusan, and Commonwealth Games champion, Ese Brume. The pair headline a blend of established and emerging stars across sprints, jumps, throws, and hurdles.

Nigeria will be aiming to replicate and even surpass its achievements from the 2022 World Championships, where Amusan stormed to a world record in the 100m hurdles (12.12s) and clinched gold, while Brume secured silver in the long jump.
