Peter Ogaba, The Youngest Player in FIFA U-20 World Cup History

Written by on 29 — 09

As the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup kicks off in Chile, one record continues to stand the test of time more than 30 years after it was set.

According to FIFA.com, Nigeria’s Peter Ogaba remains the youngest player ever to feature at the tournament. The defender etched his name into the history books at the 1989 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Saudi Arabia, when he appeared in a 1-1 group-stage draw against Czechia at just 14 years and 151 days old.

“Peter Ogaba (Nigeria) 14 years and 151 days, in the 1-1 draw with Czechia (group stage) – 1989,” FIFA noted on its official website.

That historic appearance came during a memorable campaign for Nigeria, who went all the way to the final before losing 2-0 to a Portugal side..

Born on September 24, 1974, in Jos but originally from Otukpo, Benue State, Ogaba had already shown flashes of brilliance before 1989. At just 13, he was the youngest player at the 1987 FIFA U-17 World Championship in Canada, helping the Golden Eaglets reach the final, where they lost to the USSR on penalties.

Ogaba later played club football for Hawks of Makurdi in Nigeria before moving to Europe. His career included spells at KSC Lokeren (Belgium), FC Oulu (Finland) where he celebrated a league title and MSV Duisburg (Germany) during the 1993/94 season. However, his promising journey was cut short by a serious knee injury.

After retirement, he transitioned into coaching, managing Lobi Stars (2006–2009) and later Abuja-based City Strikers FC.

Tragically, Ogaba passed away in 2016 at the age of 42 after a brief illness. Still, his legacy as a trailblazer still stood firm.
