Defending Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions, Remo Stars, began their 2025/26 campaign with a 1–1 draw against last season’s runners-up, Rivers United, at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Abeokuta, on Friday.
Rivers United took an early lead in the 3rd minute through Aniekeme Okon, before Victor Mbaoma equalised for the Sky Blue Stars six minutes later. The game ended on a tense note after Rivers United captain Temple Emekayi was shown a red card in stoppage time.
Remo Stars, who are currently hosting their home fixtures in Abeokuta due to ongoing renovations at their Ikenne base, were making their first outing since clinching the 2024/25 NPFL title.
Head Coach Daniel Ogunmodede, who marked his 100th game in charge of the club, expressed relief that his side avoided defeat despite playing away from their traditional home ground.
“Everybody wants to play against the champions, we know what is at stake. We are not playing on our home ground; it’s not an excuse but this is football. Personally, I am not satisfied with the result but not losing is a thing of joy for me. Playing outside brings a lot of panic, but we responded well,” Ogunmodede said at the post-match briefing.
