Super Eagles vs Pharaohs, A Rivalry Written in Time, Goals and Grit

Written by on 16 — 01

The football rivalry between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Egypt’s Pharaohs is one of Africa’s most enduring duels, stretching back more than six decades and cutting across AFCON battles, World Cup qualifiers, friendlies and continental tournaments.

Their first meetings came in Olympic Games qualifiers in 1959 and 1960, where Egypt asserted early dominance with heavy wins in Lagos and Cairo. The 1960s continued that trend by Egypt’s 6–3 victory at the 1963 Africa Cup of Nations in Kumasi.

Nigeria’s response gathered momentum in the 1970s. A famous 4–2 win at the 1973 All-Africa Games in Lagos signalled a shift, followed by a dramatic 3–2 victory over Egypt at the 1976 AFCON in Addis Ababa. The Super Eagles also recorded a memorable 4–0 demolition of the Pharaohs in a 1977 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Lagos, although Egypt hit back weeks later in Cairo.

The rivalry peaked in intensity during AFCON tournaments. Nigeria edged Egypt 1–0 to lift the 1980 AFCON title in Lagos, while the 1984 semi-final in Abidjan ended 2–2 before the Super Eagles triumphed 8–7 on penalties. Tight, tactical affairs followed in later editions, including goalless draws in 1988, 1994 and several friendlies.

The 21st century has delivered its own defining moments. Egypt defeated Nigeria 3–1 at the 2010 AFCON in Angola, but the Super Eagles gained revenge with a 1–0 win in the 2019 friendly in Asaba and another 1–0 success at the 2021 AFCON in Garoua, Cameroon.

Most recently, Egypt claimed a narrow 2–1 victory in a December 2025 friendly in Cairo, once again underlining how fine the margins remain between the two giants.

From Lagos to Cairo, Kumasi to Garoua, Super Eagles versus Pharaohs has never been just another fixture. It is a rivalry shaped by history, defined by balance, and fuelled by pride , one that continues to command respect across African football.
