Lagos State has expressed confidence in its contingent ahead of the 9th National Youth Games holding in Asaba, Delta State. A total of 416 athletes and 80 officials departed Lagos on Wednesday, August 27, to represent the state at the competition.

Addressing the delegation before their departure, the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Lekan Fatodu, said the state has worked on motivating its athletes to deliver outstanding performances. He noted that Lagos secured 11 slots at the South-West Zonal Ball Games Eliminations in Ibadan, adding that the state is aiming to surpass its past records in Asaba.

“We have reviewed our reward system for athletes, coaches, and technical crews, and this is expected to boost their performance. The immense support of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has also helped us strengthen our structures and improve the capacity of our athletes,” Fatodu said.

He emphasized that the athletes are highly motivated and determined to give Lagosians reasons to be proud. “Our athletes are ready to thrill, inspire, and put up exceptional performances. Lagosians should expect to see excellence on full display,” he added.

According to him, Lagos will compete strongly in athletics, swimming, boxing, weightlifting, and other events. He also stressed the commission’s commitment to fair play and proper age verification in football and other sports.

“With the talented athletes in our ranks and the strategies we have put in place, we believe Lagos will continue to stand out as a leading force in Nigerian sports,” Fatodu said.

The Director General assured that the state’s contingent would aim for multiple podium finishes, insisting that Lagos is ready to reclaim its position as Nigeria’s home of multi-sports.
