Nigeria’s athletics team will jet out of the country today, Tuesday, ahead of the 2025 World Athletics Championships scheduled to hold in Tokyo, Japan, from September 13 to 21.
The delegation comprises 15 athletes, eight men and seven women, alongside coaches and officials who will compete across 11 track and field events.
Some U.S based members of the squad, including sprinter Konyinsola Ajayi, have already arrived in Tokyo to acclimatise ahead of the competition.
Leading the Nigerian charge is world record holder and reigning 100m hurdles champion, Tobi Amusan, who remains one of the country’s strongest medal hopefuls despite mixed form this season. Also expected to make a big impact are shot put specialist Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, 400m hurdler Ezekiel Nathaniel, and long jumper Ese Brume, who memorably set her African record of 7.17m in Tokyo.
Other athletes listed for action include sprinters Samuel Ogazi, Israel Okon, Chidi Okezie, and Rosemary Chukwuma, as well as field event competitors Prestina Ochonogor, Charles Godfred, Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons, Obiageri Amaechi, and Oyesade Olatoye.
Officials of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria expressed confidence that the lean but talented squad can deliver strong performances in Tokyo, pointing to Nigeria’s recent improvements in field events and sprints.
