Team Nigeria made a resounding statement at the 2025 Africa Zone 2 Swimming Championship, breaking multiple records and unveiling a new generation of swimming talents who are redefining Nigeria’s reputation in continental waters.

Competing against elite swimmers from across West and Central Africa, Nigeria’s contingent displayed remarkable skill, grit, and composure , amassing 30 medals (11 Gold, 5 Silver, 14 Bronze) in the junior division and finishing among the top three nations overall.

Leading the charge was 14-year-old Aidan Dumuije Abili, whose performance was nothing short of spectacular. The teenage prodigy set five new Africa Zone 2 records, clinched six golds, one silver, and one bronze, and was deservedly named the Most Valuable Junior Athlete of the tournament.

Aidan’s standout swim came in the 100m Freestyle, where he clocked 55.31 seconds to earn 610 points, one of the highest scores in the championship.

“Every medal means more when you’re representing your country,” Aidan said. “Breaking records is great, but making Nigeria proud is what matters most.”

Also making headlines was 14-year-old Endurance Olise, who announced his arrival in style by winning two gold medals in his debut championship. His confident swims and strong finishes marked him as one of Nigeria’s most promising young athletes.

The youngest star of the tournament, 12-year-old Maryam Muhammed, also made waves with her fearless performances. Competing in both individual and relay events, she earned multiple medals and captivated fans and officials with her poise and precision in the water.

In the long-distance category, Timilehin Olaya cemented his place as Nigeria’s top open-water junior swimmer. With three gold medals and new championship records in the 800m and 1500m freestyle, Olaya’s endurance-driven displays stood out as some of the best of the meet.

Female swimmer Tofunmi Ibidapo added to Nigeria’s medal haul with a haul of gold, silver, and bronze in individual and team races, while Goodluck Godwin earned special recognition for his impressive progress, earning selection for the World Aquatics “Future Wave” Training Program, a prestigious seven-day elite camp for rising talents.

Senior athletes also played their part. Dorcas Oka and Agnes John put in solid performances that underscored Nigeria’s growing depth and experience at international level.

Coach Abiodun Ojomo praised the team’s collective success, emphasizing that Nigeria’s youth development system is beginning to yield tangible results.

“These results prove that our youth program is working,” Ojomo said. “We’re not just participating anymore — we’re competing, breaking records, and building future champions.”
