Rwanda national team coach, Adel Amrouche, has expressed disappointment over his side’s late defeat to Benin in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, describing the loss as “gutting.”
Speaking to sports journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, Amrouche said he had hoped to make history by guiding Rwanda to their first ever World Cup appearance.
“I am still gutted that we lost to Benin in the final minutes of our game in Kigali. I really wanted to surprise the world and get Rwanda to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. But this is football, and we must get ready for our game against South Africa,” he said.
Currently in South Africa ahead of their final qualifier against Bafana Bafana, the Rwandan coach also shared his perspective on Nigeria’s campaign in the qualifiers.
“If I were coaching a team like the Super Eagles, with the quality of players that they have, my target would be to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup, at the very minimum. Qualifying for the World Cup should not be the issue,” Amrouche stated.
Rwanda will face South Africa in a crucial tie on Tuesday as they look to end their qualification campaign on a high note.
Meanwhile the result of that match will interest Nigerians as they look through a narrow path for a possible World Cup ticket if the Super Eagles defeat Republic of Benin with a comfortable win.
