Wilfred Ndidi has received the green light to participate in the important 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff final on Sunday against DR Congo, putting an end to nearly 48 hours of uncertainty that had caused unrest in the Super Eagles camp and left fans across the nation puzzled.
However, The Super Eagles announced this update on their official X page on Saturday afternoon, stating that CAF had provided clarity regarding the midfielder’s situation.
“CAF has confirmed that Wilfred Ndidi is eligible to feature for the Super Eagles in Sunday’s playoff clash against DR Congo. Cautions accumulated during the World Cup qualifiers do not carry over into the playoffs; only confirmed suspensions apply,” the team posted.
The recent update promptly resolves the discussion that arose following Ndidi’s yellow card, which he received merely six minutes into Nigeria’s thrilling 4–1 victory over Gabon in extra time on Thursday.
This booking, being his second during the qualification cycle, was broadly viewed as an automatic disqualification for the final.

A significant boost for Nigeria
Ndidi’s return is a major advantage for the Super Eagles as they prepare for their most important match in years.
The Besiktas midfielder, who captained the Super Eagles against Gabon, is among Nigeria’s most seasoned players, providing defensive strength, effective ball recovery, and leadership during critical moments.
Nigeria will face a confident DR Congo team that eliminated Cameroon with a thrilling stoppage-time goal.
With a spot in the intercontinental playoffs on the line, Ndidi’s presence offers coach Chelle greater tactical flexibility and brings balance back to the Eagles’ midfield.
