Written by on 1 — 09

From the streets of Monrovia to the stadiums of Milan, footballing talent has often flowed from one generation to the next. A select group of father son duos have both played at the highest level.

Cesare and Paolo Maldini (Italy)

Cesare Maldini, a European Cup winner with AC Milan in 1963, laid the foundation for a football dynasty. His son, Paolo, became a Rossoneri icon, winning seven Serie A titles and five Champions League trophies in over 900 appearances.

Verdict: Paolo eclipsed his father, becoming one of the greatest defenders in history.

Peter and Kasper Schmeichel (Denmark)

Peter Schmeichel won five Premier League titles and the Champions League with Manchester United. His son, Kasper, etched his name into history with Leicester City’s miraculous 2016 Premier League triumph and Denmark’s Euro 2020 semi-final run.

Verdict: Peter’s trophy haul remains superior, but Kasper built a remarkable legacy of his own.

Danny and Daley Blind (Netherlands)

Danny Blind lifted the Champions League and multiple domestic titles with Ajax. Daley Blind, meanwhile, won the Europa League with Manchester United and earned over 100 caps for the Netherlands, surpassing his father’s international record.

Verdict: Daley edged ahead in international recognition, though both remain Ajax legends.

Mazinho and Thiago Alcântara (Brazil/Spain)

Mazinho, a World Cup winner with Brazil in 1994, inspired his sons to follow. Thiago Alcântara developed into one of Europe’s finest midfielders, winning league titles in Spain, Germany, and England, plus the Champions League with Bayern Munich.

Verdict: Thiago matched and, at club level, surpassed his father’s achievements.

George and Timothy Weah (Liberia/USA)

George Weah remains Africa’s only Ballon d’Or and FIFA World Player of the Year winner. His son, Timothy, has represented PSG, Lille, and Juventus, while playing for the USA at the World Cup.

Verdict: Timothy is building a fine career, but George’s global legend stands unmatched.

Pablo and Diego Forlán (Uruguay)

Pablo Forlán was a respected defender, but his son Diego soared higher, winning the Golden Ball at the 2010 World Cup and scoring over 30 goals for Uruguay.

Verdict: Diego comfortably surpassed his father’s achievements.

Diego and Giovanni Simeone (Argentina)

Diego Simeone enjoyed an outstanding international career with Argentina. Giovanni, now at Napoli, has shown his quality in Serie A but has yet to match his father’s impact.

Verdict: Diego remains the more decorated of the pair.

Carles and Sergio Busquets (Spain)

Carles Busquets was a goalkeeper for Barcelona, winning a Champions League medal. His son, Sergio, went on to become one of the greatest midfielders of his generation, anchoring Barcelona’s golden era and Spain’s World Cup triumph in 2010.

Verdict: Sergio is the clear standout.

Alf-Inge and Erling Haaland (Norway)

Alf-Inge Haaland enjoyed a respectable Premier League career with Leeds and Manchester City. His son, Erling, has exploded onto the world stage winning a treble with City in 2023 and breaking multiple goal scoring records.

Verdict: Erling has already far surpassed his father’s achievements.

From the Maldinis to the Haalands, football dynasties continue to capture global attention. While some sons struggle to escape their father’s shadow, others like Paolo Maldini, Sergio Busquets, and Erling Haaland have elevated their family names to new heights.
