Super Eagles goalkeeper, Adebayo Adeleye, has spoken out to set the record straight after being repeatedly mistaken or nicknamed “Andre Onana”, Cameroonian and Manchester Ukited goalkeeper.
In a statement released to the public, Adeleye expressed his displeasure over the mix up and emphasized that he should be recognized for his own identity and achievements.
“My name is Adebayo Adeleye, and I am a Nigerian goalkeeper. Unfortunately, some individuals have been mistakenly referring to me as Andre Onana, the renowned Cameroonian goalkeeper,” he said.
The 24-year-old added that while he respects Onana’s career, the comparison is unnecessary and misleading.
“I kindly request that the public refrain from associating me with Andre Onana, as we are two distinct individuals with different nationalities and careers. I am proud to be Adebayo Adeleye, a Nigerian, and I would appreciate it if my correct identity is respected and used in all references.”
Adeleye, who has been part of the Super Eagles set up, further made it clear that his focus remains on building his own career and contributing to Nigeria’s success on the international stage.
