Nigeria will be without star striker Victor Osimhen when they face South Africa in Tuesday’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Bloemfontein.
The Galatasaray forward suffered a chin injury during the Super Eagles’ 1-0 win over Rwanda on Saturday and was forced off in the first half, with Cyriel Dessers coming on in his place.
On Sunday, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed Osimhen will not make the trip with the rest of the squad.
“Team doctor confirmed Victor Osimhen’s injury is a bruise on his chin. He woke up this morning with discomfort and will not be traveling with the squad to South Africa,” the NFF said in a statement.
Osimhen’s absence is a blow for coach Eric Chelle, who knows victory is vital to keep Nigeria’s qualification hopes alive.
Still, the Super Eagles have options up front. Dessers, who replaced Osimhen against Rwanda, could lead the line, while Tolu Arokodare—the match-winner in Uyo—will also be pushing for a starting spot.
