South Africa vs Nigeria: FIFA Case Hangs Over Crucial World Cup Qualifier

South Africa’s Bafana Bafana will face Nigeria’s Super Eagles today in Bloemfontein in a decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, with the encounter overshadowed by an unresolved disciplinary case that could reshape Group C standings.
South Africa currently sit at the top of the group with 16 points from seven matches, but their position is under scrutiny after midfielder Teboho Mokoena reportedly played in a March fixture against Lesotho while suspended. FIFA regulations stipulate that such breaches normally result in a forfeiture, awarding the match as a 3–0 defeat. However, the governing body has yet to issue an official ruling.

Nigeria, who are third in the group with 10 points, see the clash as a lifeline in their bid for qualification. A victory could bring them closer to South Africa’s tally, and if FIFA later deducts points from Bafana Bafana, the race for top spot would be blown wide open.
Both sides head into the match with injury concerns. South Africa will be without defender Thabo Moloisane due to a head injury and right back Nyiko Mobbie, while Nigeria’s leading striker Victor Osimhen has been ruled out with a foot problem.

Despite the setback, Nigeria’s camp insists they are ready for the challenge. Forward Moses Simon stressed the importance of securing maximum points, saying the team must “find solutions and fight as a unit” in Osimhen’s absence.
The stakes are high for both nations. South Africa aim to consolidate their leadership of Group C, while Nigeria seek to revive their campaign and keep hopes of a World Cup ticket alive.
Kick off is scheduled for 5:00 PM local time in Bloemfontein.
