Bafana Bafana Show Newfound Maturity Under Hugo Broos

Written by on 12 — 09

Bafana Bafana’s steady transformation continued on Thursday night as they held one of Africa’s big teams, Nigeria to a 1–1 draw in a 2026 World Cup qualifying match, with the performance highlighting the national team’s growing resilience and maturity under coach Hugo Broos.

Once criticised for inconsistency and psychological lapses in crucial fixtures, South Africa now look a different side. Broos, who has been in charge since 2021, has instilled grit, discipline and tactical organisation into the squad, replacing the overreliance on flair that often left the team vulnerable.

The display against Nigeria reflected that progress. Despite facing one of Africa’s strongest teams, Bafana maintained composure, battled for every ball, and matched their opponents for intensity throughout the encounter.

Broos has also addressed long standing weaknesses in defence and game management, with the team now showing the ability to control tempo and remain focused regardless of the opposition.
