Team Nigeria enjoyed a memorable outing on Day 5 of the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, with Ezekiel Nathaniel and Udodi Onwuzurike delivering standout performances.
Nathaniel wrote his name into the history books by qualifying for the final of the men’s 400m hurdles. Running from lane 8, the 21 year old produced a blistering finish in the semifinal, clocking 47.47 seconds to cross the line first. His achievement makes him the first Nigerian man since Henry Amike in 1987 to reach the World Championships final in this event.
Meanwhile, in the men’s 200m, Onwuzurike continued his fine form, securing a place in the semifinals after finishing second in his heat. The former World U20 champion clocked 20.27 seconds, trailing only American Kenny Bednarek, who won in 19.98 seconds.
Onwuzurike now faces a tough semifinal test against global sprint stars.
