Super Falcons Star Ifeoma Onumonu Announces Retirement from Professional Football

Super Falcons forward Ifeoma Onumonu has officially announced her retirement from professional football, drawing the curtain on a remarkable career defined by passion, consistency, and brilliance on the field.

The 31 year old made the announcement through her social media pages, thanking fans, teammates, and coaches for their support throughout her journey.

Onumonu, who began her football career in the United States, represented the California Golden Bears between 2012 and 2016, where she made 82 appearances and scored 33 goals during her college years.

She went on to play for several top clubs in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), including Boston Breakers, Portland Thorns, Reign FC, and NJ/NY Gotham FC, where she helped the side win the 2023 NWSL Championship.

In 2024, she joined Utah Royals before moving to French side Montpellier, where she ended her career after scoring 7 goals in 20 appearances.

On the international stage, Onumonu represented the United States U23 team before switching allegiance to Nigeria in 2021. She went on to earn 32 caps and score 5 goals for the Super Falcons, featuring in major tournaments such as the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, FIFA Women’s World Cup, and the Olympic Games.

Her contributions to women’s football earned her several individual recognitions, including:

NWSL Best XI Second Team (2021)

NWSL Team of the Month (June 2019, August 2021)

NWSL Player of the Week (2019, Weeks 10 & 13)

At the international level, she celebrated success with Nigeria, winning the 2024 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON).
