Chelsea captain Reece James has withdrawn from the England national team after sustaining an injury during the club’s 2–1 Premier League victory over Liverpool at Stamford Bridge last weekend.
The 25-year-old right-back, who has been a symbol of resilience and leadership in a rebuilding Chelsea side, picked up a painful shin gash following a late challenge in the closing stages of the encounter. Initially, the injury appeared minor, but further medical checks prompted his withdrawal from the national team camp.
The English Football Association confirmed James’ absence on Monday, announcing that Manchester City midfielder Nico O’Reilly has been called up as a replacement. While the injury is not considered serious, Chelsea and England medical teams have agreed that his withdrawal is a precautionary measure to avoid aggravating the knock.
Speaking on the situation, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca highlighted the impact of the congested fixture schedule on players’ fitness.
“We’re paying the consequences of a very tight fixture list. Reece’s issue doesn’t look too serious, but we’ll continue to monitor him,” Maresca said.
James’ fitness has been a recurring concern in recent seasons, with multiple injuries interrupting his playing time. Despite this, he remains a key figure for Chelsea, both as club captain and through his attacking contributions down the right flank.
