Jakirović hails Semi Ajayi’s influence as Hull City stun Norwich at Carrow Road

Written by on 2 — 11

Hull City boss Sergej Jakirović couldn’t hide his admiration for Nigerian defender Semi Ajayi, whose introduction changed the tide in their 2–0 win over Norwich City on Saturday.

The Tigers looked second best in the first half, unable to match Norwich’s pace and intensity. Jakirović was honest in his post match reflection, admitting his side were fortunate to head into the break level.

“They were much better than us in the first half,” he said. “We couldn’t cope both in and out of possession. They created several big chances.”

Everything shifted after the interval. Ajayi, who replaced an underperforming defender at half time, immediately brought structure and leadership to Hull’s backline. Just minutes after his introduction, Joe Gelhardt put the visitors ahead, before Darko Gyabi wrapped up the points with a composed finish later on.

Jakirović was quick to note the difference Ajayi made, describing his second-half influence as the spark Hull needed.

“With Semi on, we became solid,” Jakirović explained. “He gave us balance and confidence. Everyone suddenly looked comfortable again.”

The win was a special one for Hull City, their first victory at Carrow Road in 15 years, and a result that keeps their momentum alive in the Championship race.

Now up to seventh place after four wins in their last five matches, the Tigers are quietly pushing towards the promotion spots.

For Ajayi, it was another standout performance, an obvious reality he’s got a bag full of Premier League experience. His commanding display could very well earn him a consistent starting role in the coming weeks.
