Victor Osimhen is writing his name deeper into football history with each passing game. The Galatasaray striker delivered another breathtaking performance in the UEFA Champions League, netting a hattrick against Ajax and in the process, setting a string of remarkable records.
The Nigerian forward became the first Galatasaray player ever to score a brace in back to back Champions League matches and also the first in the club’s history to win three consecutive Man of the Match awards in the competition.
Osimhen’s scoring form has been nothing short of sensational. He has now found the net in eight consecutive UEFA games, and his hattrick against Ajax makes him only the second Nigerian to ever score a Champions League hattrick, following Yakubu Ayegbeni’s feat for Maccabi Haifa against Olympiacos back in September 2002 — 23 years ago.
With 15 Champions League goals to his name, Osimhen is also the current top scorer in this season’s campaign with six goals, despite missing Galatasaray’s opening game.
Even more impressively, the 26-year old has now become Nigeria’s all time top scorer in UEFA club competitions, overtaking Obafemi Martins’ long standing record of 23 goals. Osimhen’s tally stands at 25 UEFA goals, underlining his growing reputation as one of Africa’s most lethal finishers.
