Towel Stealing Controversy at AFCON Raises Serious Concerns Over Fair Play and Match Integrity

Written by on 26 — 01

The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) was rocked by controversy following repeated incidents involving the removal of goalkeepers’ towels during key matches, notably the final between Morocco and Senegal and the semi-final clash between Morocco and Nigeria.

While seemingly trivial, the behaviour has drawn huge criticism due to its potential impact on player performance, match integrity, and the overall image of African football .

Goalkeepers rely on towels to dry their gloves, especially in humid or rainy conditions, to maintain grip and handling. During the final, Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy was repeatedly denied access to his towel after ball boys and pitch side personnel removed it from behind the goal. This disruption forced Senegal’s reserve goalkeeper Yéhvann Diouf to intervene on multiple occasions, diverting attention away from the match itself.

In high pressure matches, such interference can directly affect concentration, reaction time, and confidence. Analysts noted that denying a goalkeeper basic equipment creates an uneven playing field, undermining the principle of fair competition that CAF regulations are designed to protect.

The towel incidents contributed to heightened tensions on the pitch. In the Morocco Vs. Senegal final, confrontations between players, ball boys, and substitutes briefly disrupted play, compounding an already volatile atmosphere marked by disputed decisions and crowd unrest. Similar scenes were reported earlier in the tournament during Morocco’s semi-final against Nigeria, where Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali also had towels repeatedly removed by pitch attendants .

Such actions increase the risk of physical altercations, provoke retaliatory behaviour, and can quickly escalate into broader disorder placing players, officials, and spectators at risk.

Beyond the immediate matches, the incidents have wider reputational consequences. International media coverage framed the towel stealing episodes as symbolic of poor match control and weak enforcement of regulations. Critics argue that when unsporting conduct by ball boys, stewards, or even players goes unchecked, it erodes confidence in officiating standards and governance structures.

The controversy also raised questions about host nation responsibilities, particularly regarding steward training and neutrality, as well as CAF’s ability to enforce discipline consistently across venues.

CAF later condemned inappropriate sideline conduct and indicated that match footage would be reviewed, with possible sanctions against those responsible. Observers stress that without clear punitive measures, such behaviour risks becoming normalized, setting a dangerous precedent for future tournaments .
